LIVE updates on the Chandrayaan 3 moon landing: After the US, China, and the Soviet Union, India became the fourth nation in the world to have perfected the science of soft landing on the lunar surface. Today at 6:04 PM as planned, the Lander Module touched down on the moon.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is taking extra precautions with this mission in light of the history of India’s previous lunar mission, which met with failure in the final 20 minutes before attempting a landing.

The final minutes before lunar touchdown were known as the “20 or 17 minutes of terror” because of the significant risk they posed to the mission. At this point, the operating process would change to an autonomous mode, requiring the Vikram lander to engage its propulsion systems at specific times and altitude thresholds.
